Information on professional indemnity insurance

Territorial scope of the insurance: The insurance covers my work as a lawyer carried out from my firm in Germany. Section 15 of the insurance terms restricts the cover:
- The insurance does not cover work carried out from law firms or offices in other countries.
- The insurance does not cover advice on the law of the United States and Canada, or representation in proceedings before the courts of these two countries.
- Where I advise on non-European law, the insurance does not cover contractual penalties, fines, punitive damages or claims for discrimination.
- For proceedings before courts outside Europe, cover is limited to the statutory minimum sum insured.
Consumer dispute resolution
For pecuniary disputes arising from the engagement, in other words disputes about money, you can apply to the Schlichtungsstelle der Rechtsanwaltschaft (conciliation board of the German legal profession). It is established at the Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer under Section 191f BRAO and works independently. Address: Rauchstraße 26, 10787 Berlin, www.schlichtungsstelle-der-rechtsanwaltschaft.de. I do not take part in dispute resolution proceedings before any other consumer dispute resolution body, and I am not obliged to do so.
